I love Chipotle. I go there like 2-3 times a week easy. Sunday night was no different. I rolled on in there to pick up dinner for Mrs. Rodius and myself. And what did I see parked right next to the spot I was pulling into? It was like someone took all the things that piss me off and put them into one item. Check it out for yourself:
No your eyes do not deceive you, that indeed is a crucifix with a blaringly loud stars and stripes pattern exploding out from its center. For those new to the site you can read all about my hate for bumper stickers in general in my Bumper Sticker Blasphemy post. For the regulars, you already feel my pain.
My pain exists on a number of levels. The obvious one is just the surface level of hating people with stickers on their car especially in areas that are vital to see out of to drive safely. On a deeper level I have issues with the iconography.
Now I know Christians use the crucifix as a symbol of their faith in Jesus Christ. Rock on. Have fun with that. I understand it and I can even get with the sickly white man you guys sometimes portray on the cross, in a false representation of what you think your messiah looked like (You know he looked more like Obama than Fabio right?).
What I don’t get is why someone would portray a distorted American flag in a crucifix. Let’s run down the options:
a) You think Jesus spent some time in the States and told all his friends how much it rocked! Well, since America wasn’t even founded till 1700 years after his death this is highly unlikely. In fact it seems likely he would be more apt to support a country like Israel than the US.
b) Since the crucifix is, in itself, one of the cruelest torture devices known to man, you must be saying that you think America should be tortured. You have shown this by actually mounting an abstract flag on the crucifix just as your savior was. A bold stance but I can respect that.
c) You are so pro-torture that you can’t think of a better way to show your support for America’s use of it other than to make your country synonymous with it.
Beyond these simple facts you have shown your complete
ignorance of basic iconic recognition, because you most likely do not realize that the flag you are choosing to display on your bad ass Explorer is a rip off of Japan. See the image to the right? That is Japan’s Land of the Rising Sun symbol, which as you can see the stripes on your sticker are stolen from. So not only are you failing to be clear in your iconic statement you are also unoriginal. And this cannot stand Sir.
Of course I realize the the connection the person behind the wheel is trying to make. America is a Christian nation. I have covered that subject ad nauseum in my “Christian Nation?” post. So I will sum it up with this as I always do, please point me to the words “Jesus” or “Christ” in our Constitution. Get back to me when you have read it.
