The Beat Of Your Own Drum

by Jrodius on 11/19/2009

I love me some Ventures. The 1960’s surf quartet is the essence of surf music to me. There are disciples of Dick Dale and The Beach Boys that may say otherwise, but I just love me some Ventures.

For those not familiar with The Ventures you probably already know their music but don’t realize it. They did the theme song for Hawaii 5-0. But I have always been a fan of their covers of other surf songs, like The Chantay’s “Pipeline” and The Surfari’s “Wipeout”.

The reason for me bringing this up today is because I just found the best footage of these guys from 1983 with Max Weinberg sitting in on their set. You gotta check out Max in his prime with the E-Street band rocking the big glasses. This is their biggest hit, the theme from Hawaii 5-0. This video is so old school legit it comes complete with 12 seconds of VCR text at the beginning.

So you may be asking yourself, “Why is a 1980’s Pimp like Max Weinberg kicking it with a bunch of geezers?” Because that guy playing the drums for The Ventures is named Mel Taylor. And Mel Taylor is a God.  He is one of the fathers of innovative rock drumming.  With maybe only Gene Krupa perhaps being before him.  Check my man out here banging the crap out of the world’s smallest drum set back in 1963.
