Words cannot fully explain how much I detest chain mail. My hate for it exists on many levels. There is the general disdain I have for people who simply pass along the thoughts and ideas of others rather than being intelligent clever enough to create their own. Then there is the complete lack of fact checking that seems to coincide with the mentality of people who are fans of forwarding chain mail. I bring this up today because I feel we have officially hit a tipping point regarding a certain topic, and for me it all started with chain mail.
In the weeks/months leading up to the Presidential Election, I was bombarded with chain mail asserting numerous fear mongering facts about Barack Obama. Often times filled with things that if people had simply searched snopes.com, they would have realized were entirely untrue. For those who don’t know, snopes is a site solely dedicated to fact checking urban legend and ridiculous rumors.
I can’t tell you how many times I got emails listing all the ways Obama was in the pocket of Muslims.
“His middle name is Hussein!”
“He attended a madrasah!”
On and on and on. That’s fine. If those are the simplistic dots that you want to connect then go right ahead, I won’t begrudge you your misguided ways.
But a message to Obama’s detractors… Can you please all meet up and decide once and for all who he is in the pocket of? In these same chain emails I got, I would hear about how his Christian pastor was pulling Obama’s strings and how he must be a radical just like his pastor. Well which is it? Is he a Muslim terrorist, or a black extremist that must follow his the ways of his Christian leader? You can’t have both.
As if those weren’t enough we have the newest option grabbed right from today’s headlines. The 88 year old white supremacist that shot the guard at the Museum of Tolerance, is claiming that Obama is aligned with the Jews! How can it be that this guy is working for the radical factions of all three of the worlds biggest religions at once? And if he is, he is now, certainly, the best candidate for brokering peace in the Middle East that has ever existed.
So do me a favor. Next time you all gather up your hoods, burning crosses, rifles, swastikas, and put your home schooled brains together come up with a concensus please. Because the rest of us are tired of keeping up.
Don’t worry, we’ll know when you have reached a decision… I’ll just look for the chain mail with the terrible grammar and improper spelling.
