Arcade Fire

Haiti Mon Pays

by Jrodius on 01/16/2010

Are you like me?  Do you have songs that you feel just sound better when they are live.  Songs that you are merely indifferent about when hearing them on crystal clear recording?  But live… That’s when the song truly shines.  That’s how I feel about this song.

This is a live performance of Arcade Fire’s “Haiti”.  Written by Regine, the woman singing it, it is a tribute to the country of her mother and father.  A country she herself was never able to go to until last year.  A country where her grandfather was kidnapped and murdered by the hostile regime in place.  A country her family fled for fear of their lives.  This is a song about that country and how she longs to know it.

Regine penned a letter published today in The Guardian (A leading newspaper in the UK) about her strong feelings about the recent events in Haiti, it is a great read and I wanted to pass it along.

I don’t usually post lyrics to songs, but in this case I did because I find them moving and also because they are mixed with French which I have translated for you in red.

Haïti, mon pays, (Haiti my country)
wounded mother I’ll never see.
Ma famille set me free. (My family set me free)
Throw my ashes into the sea.

Mes cousins jamais nés (My cousins never born)
hantent les nuits de Duvalier. (haunt the nights of Duvalier)
Rien n’arrete nos esprits. (Nothing stops our spirits)
Guns can’t kill what soldiers can’t see.

In the forest we lie hiding,
unmarked graves where flowers grow.
Hear the soldiers angry yelling,
in the river we will go.

Tous les morts-nés forment une armée, (All the dead born form an army)
soon we will reclaim the earth.
All the tears and all the bodies
bring about our second birth.

Haïti, never free,
n’aie pas peur de sonner l’alarme. (unafraid to sound of alarm)
Tes enfants sont partis, (your children are leaving)
In those days their blood was still warm

Best Of The Decade Contest

12.28.2009

One thing I love about the end of each year is all the “Best Of” lists that spring up.  So you can imagine this year is even more fun for me because it is populated by “Best Of the Decade” lists as well.
For those near and dear to me, you know that I am a [...]

Following The Moon

11.10.2009

I’m afraid in my last post I didn’t pay enough homage to a certain part of it.  You see I included a clip from La Blogotheque’s “A Take Away Show” series.  This is a fantastic ongoing series they put out of great artists performing candidly in all sorts of different locations.  But the reason I [...]

The Lighter Side

06.15.2009

So I think I have been way too negative lately.  Too heavy, not enough fun.  To try and turn that tide I am going to post some of the things I have been enjoying as of late.  Hopefully you all will dig them as well.
Zach Galifinakis-  For many of us in the know, Zach is [...]

Windowsill- Arcade Fire
I Woke Up in a [...]

Guilty Pleasures Pt. III

02.23.2009

This what I like to call the iPod challenge.  It is simple, to the point and its honest.  No real creative effort necessary, just the balls to be honest and tell it like it is.  Here’s the deal.  Go to your iPod, not your iTunes, and list the songs in your Recently Played playlist.  The [...]

Final Fantasy

01.14.2009

Restlessness in a dingy Kentucky hotel room brought me here.  Final Fantasy is a one man band.  A guy named Owen Pallett.  Just he and his violin.  He uses foot pedals to record live loops which he layers upon to create a full swelling sound.  He does originals and covers.  The first one below is [...]
