Oscar Got It Wrong

by Puddins on 03/05/2010

I love the Oscars.

We had a tradition in my family every Oscar telecast. We’d have a party, inviting all of our family friends, and everyone invited would pick who would win in each category. I was usually pretty good at this.

Here are my quick picks for who will win this year:

Picture: The Hurt Locker

Actor: Jeff Bridges

Actress: Sandra Bullock

Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz (one of the best performances I have seen in years)

Supporting Actress: Mo’Nique

Director: Kathryn Bigelow

Screenplay (Original): Quentin Tarantino

Screenplay (Adapted): Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner

But the Academy Awards sometimes get it wrong. Here are a couple of examples:

Vince Vaughn (Swingers)

This is one of the most perfect performances of all time. No kidding. He completely nails it. Totally likable. He is hysterical. A crime that he wasn’t nominated.

Jaye Davidson (The Crying Game)

Yes, Davidson was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for playing the cross-dressing lounge singer, but honestly, I can’t believe he didn’t win. Amazing performance.

Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings)

I can’t believe that he didn’t win an Oscar. He is the true heart of this trilogy. He is the reason this is the movie series of the decade.

Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction)

He is the reason that movie is so iconic. No question.

Denzel Washington (Malcolm X)

He lost to Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman. A crime, people. A CRIME.

This is just off the top of my head. What did I miss?

An Issue of Civil Rights

02.21.2010

Not sure how this is going to be received, but what the hell? Here goes:
So, apparently February is Freedom to Marry Month. You can check out the website for Marriage Equality USA by clicking here.
When the now infamous Proposition 8 passed here in California a few years back, essentially amending the state constitution to define [...]

The Quest for Syrup

01.04.2010

This morning, say around 6:30 while they sat in bed, my wife asked my two-year-old son what he wanted for breakfast, and he emphatically answered, “Pancakes!” Now I’m not entirely sure how my son is able to access his memory of different foods. I’m not sure if he has mental pictures or if he needs [...]

Five Amazing Things My Wife Can Do

12.31.2009

Hello, crimestoppers. Sorry I haven’t been around in a while (ahem, a year), but I was busy raising babies (well, one baby anyway) and planning lessons for unappreciative teenagers. Anyway, I was inspired recently in the shower (where I usually get most of my good ideas) to write this article. Plus, a man should never [...]

My Childhood Firsts

04.06.2009

In keeping with Jrodius’ theme of prepubescent memories, here are a couple of my childhood firsts. Remember that these recollections are often incomplete or cloudy, so please forgive any unintended embellishments. That’s the thing about memory—you can never entirely trust its reliability:
First really horrible thing I ever did:
Sometime when I was seven, I stabbed my [...]

The Trilogy Meter

02.26.2009

A guy named Dan Meth has created an interesting chart. He lists every major trilogy from movie history and gives each movie in a series a rating based on his level of enjoyment. Here is the chart:

I have to say that, by-and-large, I agree with Mr. Meth on most of his choices, except for [...]

A Couple Pet Peeves

02.24.2009

In a semi-response to Jrodius’ whole Uggs rant, I offer below a couple of my own pet peeves:
People who start getting on an elevator right when the doors open, before everyone trying to get off the elevator has had the chance to do so. Seriously, what’s the fucking hurry, dude? The elevator’s not going anywhere. [...]

My Religious Conversion

02.18.2009

I was raised Catholic. And by raised Catholic, I mean that I was baptized as a baby, went to church every Sunday (including major holidays and feast days), went to 6 years of Catholic elementary school, 2 years of Catholic middle school, and 4 years of Catholic high school. All of this, plus the four [...]

Best Sudden Deaths

02.15.2009

Usually when someone dies in a movie or on a TV show, you can see it coming a mile away.
However, my favorite deaths are the ones that caught me completely off guard when I saw them for the first time. Here are some of my favorites:
Lost: Mr. Artz (Daniel Roebuck)
This is probably the best death [...]

Best TV Commercials Ever

02.13.2009

I have watched a lot of TV in my life. No really. A lot. I mean more than is probably healthy.
And in all of those years of watching TV, I can safely assure you that I have seen more commercials than the average person. Madison Avenue has been having  its way with my impressionable little [...]
