It has been sometime since I delved into the realm of politics on this site. Which is probably a bit odd for those of you whom have followed this site from it’s inception. At first I was out to change the world one reader at a time. To open their eyes to the world around us and not believe the bullshit that is preached to us as news every day. But I have to admit that as of late the system has really gotten to me. On a very deep level.
I think I may have finally given up on believing America can ever be good and smart again. I may have given up on believing the people have any voice anymore. I have given up so much that I find I rarely can ever even bring myself to read the news anymore. Partly because the facts are so depressing but perhaps more because the facts themselves are so mired in bullshit rhetoric and partisan spin that it is just too much work to do the filtering.
But today I read a couple things that make me feel I am not alone, that maybe some people are starting to get it.
For those that know me, you know I am a complete hater of the political party system. While it is no secret that I have what people would define as liberal tendencies, I am in no way a supporter of the Democratic party. Or any party for that matter. I have never been registered for a political party, instead opting for the Decline To State choice available here in California.
Back to my point, the two pieces I read today go hand in hand. They are about people like my self fed up with the party system. What makes them different however is that they were written by people choosing to denounce their parties and call out the misgivings of their very own. More impressive still is that they’re both conservatives. I say this not as a slight against the right, but more so as evidence of just how impressive they are. The Right has always been the more structured well oiled machine of the two parties. Their resolve so strong and unified it is quite impressive how much they stand behind each other. While the Democrats can barely seem to ever find a single stream of consciousness (see their current support for their President).
So when members of the conservative movement start mutinying upon their own, it is something quite amazing. This was the case when I read The Atlantic author Andrew Sullivan’s most recent article entitled, Leaving The Right. A piece inspired by Charles Johnson’s, Why I Left The Right.
Having read both pieces I am inspired that perhaps the political climate in America is not as bleak as I thought. Hopefully if more people on both sides begin to renounce their parties for the farces they are, we can begin a new dialogue in America. Not to say we will all agree and be one big happy family, but if we can start rejecting the disgraceful fringe elements of these two parties, we will have already taken great strides to finding common ground. We will have already found one; that the people running these institutions are both completely fucked in the head.
And that seems like a good starting point.

I wrote something on my site about both of these here: http://selfdeprecate.com/blog/leaving-the-right-like-rats-off-a-sinking-ship/
I was pleasantly surprised by the ‘Atlantic’ piece.
